June 2009 Charity Fundraiser – Wakatipu Search & Rescue

sarYou may remember last year we ran a May/June fundraiser to raise money for a new tracking device for the Royal Albatross Centre in Dunedin and raised a whopping $12,365.40c! Well this year we have decided to help the local Wakatipu Search and Rescue volunteers.

For the whole month of June we will be offering extra swings (usually $39) in exchange for a minimum donation of $10 which will go toward the training and equipment needed for the Wakatipu Search and Rescue. The entire crew at Wakatipu Land SAR is made up of volunteers who drop sticks and run to help any time of day or night to help locals and tourists in a variety of situations. Thanks to these guys we can all go exploring the local mountains & surroundings, safe and secure.

Visit www.wakatipusar.co.nz for more information on their work. We’re hoping to raise as much money as we can to buy the equipment needed for the Bush and Avalanche Rescue dogs and the training of both dogs and handlers.

Throughout the fundraiser, the retail price of a swing booking remains at $179. Extra swings will be FREE OF CHARGE, but all we ask is that a minimum donation of $10 is made. As always extra swings are on a time available basis as we don’t want to rush anyone off the edge of the platform. Don’t worry, in usual Shotover Canyon Swing style, each customer will still be allowed the time they need on the platform to gather that courage and to consider if they are brave enough. As always, underpant reinforcement is available at site for those who need it. If you would like to make any additional donations to the cause, please let us know; additional collection buckets will be at Swing Site and our shop.

Happy Swinging!!!!

Shop Refurbishment

Can you believe that we have been operating in our shop on Shotover Street for 2 whole years now!!! It's crazy how quickly time flies! Well, we decided it's about time we had a wee freshen up so we are giving our shop a pretty facelift over the next couple of weeks. Don't worry, we are still fully operational during this time, and the onky change is that:

From Saturday 30th May until Tuesday 9th June, we will be checking in our trips at the Info & Track Centre, 37 Shotover Street. (Yes, it's just next door, so you shouldn't get lost!)

i-Swing Championship – May 2009

From 11th – 31st May 2009, we are running a brilliant competition for our customers! We have challenged our customers to set a new record for holding on to the ‘Indian Rope Trick’ and for the number of ‘Flips’ during freefall. The competitors go in to win an i-Pod Touch and there’s also a couple of Swing merchandise packs up for grabs as well!

Our current Flip record (but don’t worry, he’s not in the competition) is held by Mad Flippin’ Filip “Flippad” Ljungberg who came out a couple of years ago. Check out his amazingness:

(The Canyon Swing part is about 1min 39secs into the clip, but it’s worth watching the whole thing, this guy is AMAZING!!!!)

And the record for the ‘Indian Rope Trick’is held by a staff member (also not part of the competition), The Man of Pinkness,  who held on to the rope for 1min 05secs!!!! Craziness!!!!!

Good luck to everyone entering the competition! We will be posting up the results as soon as they’re in!

Queenstown Map & Frisbee Golf

Hi!

We've been busy creating our very own Queenstown map and these awesomely useful pieces of highly quality info hit the streets recently. We've teamed up with the guys at ITAG visitor guides and designed a doubl-sided A3 size that covers downtown Queenstown, Queenstown and Frankton suburbs and a larger regional map that includes the ski fields, the region's best walks and detailed inserts of Sunshine Bay and Arrowtown. The maps come in rip off pads and also a very handy pocket-sized prefolded version! These maps are available at our shop and various information centres all around town!

We are also always on the look out to help Swing customers make the most of Queenstown and not burn a hole in their wallets, so we are now proudly displaying information on the Queenstown Frisbee Golf Course in our shop! When we designed our Queenstown Map, we thought it would be great to give the old favourite pastime of plastic disc throwing some support! Information on the course is now available in our shop as well a fantastic range of frisbees to rent. Woohooo!!!!!

New, New, New!!!!

We’ve had quite a few changes happen in the past couple of months out here at the Swing! We have had a few beloved staff members leave – Franko is off back to Aussie, Taelor has gone onto adventures in South America, and Jack has gone to work in a vineyard in Nelson. Best of luck to you guys, we miss you!

When staff members leave, we obviously get new people to come out and play with us, so welcome to trainee Jumpmasters Pete and Pirate Steve, and new Domette (customer service staff) Sally!!!! Come on out on one of our trips to meet these guys!

Pirate Steve in disguise as a baby! Very clever!

Pete, who we have decided is our Operations Manager Harry's long lost son, looks like this....but younger!

Hooray!!!!!

We did it!!!! We won TNT Magazine's 2008 Golden Backpacks Award for 'Best Activity in New Zealand' – that's two years in a row so far! We're so stoked with this as the votes are made by the customers that jump off a cliff with us, not by number-crunching people in suits! You ch-ch-choooose us! It's a huge pat on the back for doing what we love doing the best – spreading the Swing Love! Thank you so much to all of those customers who voted for us, we love you!!!!!

MISSING: The notorious C-R-I-S-P-Y

When we first heard that our beloved Jumpmaster, Crispy (aka C-Dog), was returning to the Swing after his extensive adventures overseas we all leapt for joy and high-fived! Alas, tragedy has struck, as we have been sent an imposter instead! Who is this dwarfish Hagrid lookalike? We suspect this man may be Blind Phil’s long lost son – see the amazing likeness below!

crispyphil

For now we are just going to have to make do with this imposter and his inappropriate beard rubbings. If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of sweet, sweet Crispy, please let us know immediately! We promise you will be handsomely rewarded!
